Eastern Sea is a triangular body of water situated in the easternmost portion of Orylia, serving as a critical maritime artery for the region. The sea is bounded by Ulmarka to the west and the continental archipelago to the northeast. It is administratively divided into two principal sections: the northern half, locally known as the Western Sea, and the southern portion, referred to as the Gulf of Lyras.[citation needed] Its three defining corners are marked by the tip of Vharnhold, the headland at Lyras Port, and the northernmost promontory of Ulmarka. The waters connect the Northwestern Sea to the interior via the Lyradian isthmus, a narrow land bridge spanning approximately 45 kilometers in the north. The River Caledon flows into the sea from the south, forming a wide estuary that borders the city of Harbourview.1
The seabed features varied topography, including shallow sandbars and deeper channels used for heavy freight traffic. Along the southern coast, sedimentary deposits often leave traces of ochre on exposed rocks during low tide, providing a common visual marker for coastal navigators. The ecosystem supports diverse marine life, making the area a significant fishing ground, though recent years have seen fluctuations in catch volumes due to climatic shifts and regulatory changes.2[citation needed]
History
[edit]
The Eastern Sea has functioned as a strategic maritime route since antiquity, facilitating trade between the northern and southern regions of Orylia. Traditional accounts trace the founding of Vharnhold in 871 to Colby, who disappeared into the sea undefeated in 904. The region's waters were central to early Ulmarkan oil-wrestling traditions and later became vital supply lines during the Protectorate Wars (2035–2041). In 2041, Imperial forces occupied the Rendorlin coast, establishing logistics hubs along the riverbanks that passed through the sea. The waters also witnessed significant events including the smuggling of footage from the Hand Trials in 2041 and the aftermath of the 2049 Sylvaris Transit Corridor Bombing, which targeted transit corridors near its shores.3
Politics and Administration
[edit]Following the incorporation into the Commonwealth of Lyras in 1920, the waters around the Eastern Sea were administered as part of the federal maritime zone. The National Accord of 2016 established a free trade framework along the Lyradian isthmus, impacting shipping lanes through the sea. In 2038, during the Protectorate Wars, the area was occupied by Ulmarkan forces. The Caseira Ferry Terminal, located on the southwestern coast of the Lyradian Isthmus, remains operational as a key transport hub.[citation needed] The Isthmus Logistics Authority, founded in May 2030, manages regional shipping and customs to ensure the flow of goods remains uninterrupted.4
Environment and Economy
[edit]The Eastern Sea supports diverse marine ecosystems and serves as a major fishing ground for the Commonwealth. In 2042, harvest failures across Ulmarka following a cold, wet summer impacted local fisheries, causing economic ripple effects that lasted into 2043. The sea's northern sector is critical for supply lines connecting the High Northern Reach to other regions. Environmental groups like the Green Party have advocated for wilderness protection along its coasts since 2004.[citation needed] Port expansion projects completed in 2041 boosted trade with Sylvaris and Thalassar, reinforcing the sea's economic importance.5
Recent Conflicts
[edit]
The Eastern Sea has been a theater of recent conflict. In September 2061, the Vharnhold insurrection involved government forces under President Kaelen Voss and military command from Sylvaris. Concurrently, water supply contamination affected the Sylvaris reservoir catchment, impacting communities reliant on eastern maritime routes. The sea's proximity to Vharnhold made it a focal point during the occupation of the Rendorlin coast in 2041. Smuggled footage of the Hand Trials in 2041 caused international outrage, with investigations implicating elements linked to the Brass Concord.6
