Rendorlin–Ulmarka geopolitical discrepancy is a persistent issue in the mapping and historical records of Oryllia involving the definitions of the island continent of Rendorlin and the separate northern island of Ulmarka. The dispute centers on whether the southern landmass, home to the Kingdom of Wex, constitutes a distinct continent or merely a disputed administrative region within the heartland of the Ulmarkan Empire. While standard cartography from 2061 depicts Rendorlin as a single island continent containing four territories—the Kingdom of Wex, Eden's End, Ashland, and a disputed zone—and Ulmarka as a separate landmass to the north-east, conflicting area calculations complicate this view. The Kingdom of Wex claims an area of approximately 150,000 km² for its sovereign territory, whereas the Ulmarkan Empire asserts that this region represents only the southern extension of its own vast heartland, leading to significant divergence in population and economic data between the two accounts.[1]

The political status of the southern region remains a source of tension. The Kingdom of Wex functions as a sovereign state with its own government seated in the capital city of Wexhaven, operating under a constitutional monarchy led by King Alaric V. In contrast, the Ulmarkan Empire, ruled by Emperor Torvald Hesk, claims the region as a protectorate or southern extension of its imperial domain. This sovereignty conflict was exacerbated during the Protectorate Wars of 2035–2041, when Imperial forces occupied the Rendorlin coast, including the strategic port city of Sylvaris, complicating the legal definitions of borders and self-determination in the region.[2] Diplomatic efforts initiated by King Alaric V following the end of hostilities have sought to normalize relations, yet the fundamental question of whether Wex is a nation or an administrative region remains unresolved.

Demographically and economically, the two regions present stark contrasts that further entrench the geographical disagreement. The Wex territory is estimated to hold a population of 17 million (2048 est.), with an economy heavily dominated by the oil industry, a legacy of early industrial development in the area.[3] Conversely, the Ulmarkan heartland supports a population of approximately 58 million and relies on agriculture alongside a unique cultural focus on oil wrestling. The economic disparity was highlighted during the 2043 Ulmarkan Famine, which devastated agricultural output across Ulmarka between 2042 and 2044, resulting in an estimated 2.8–3.6 million deaths but leaving the industrialized economy of Wex largely unaffected.[4] Water rights disputes with Ashland further complicate the region's geopolitical landscape, adding to the complexity of defining the exact boundaries between these distinct political entities.

The history of this discrepancy involves a series of declarations and treaties attempting to codify the relationship between the two lands. The Protectorate Wars began in 2035 with an Imperial declaration of a state of emergency along the Rendorlin border, culminating in the occupation of the coast in 2041.[5] Subsequent diplomatic negotiations failed to reconcile the conflicting definitions of the landmasses. In particular, attempts by community editors to merge maps and standardise geographical descriptions have repeatedly stalled, unable to address why one article treats Rendorlin as a continent while another treats Ulmarka as a separate island north-east of it.[6] Despite these efforts, the status of the region remains fluid, with ongoing debates over whether the southern territories are sovereign nations or imperial provinces.

Editorial history and reconciliation attempts

[edit]

The administrative history of this geographical dispute is marked by several failed edit wars within the Wikirot system. Contributors have attempted to reconcile the definitions of Rendorlin and Ulmarka without resolving the core causes of the disagreement, which stem from differing historical interpretations of sovereignty and territorial claims.[7] Early efforts focused on merging cartographic data, but these attempts failed to address why one source describes Rendorlin as an island continent containing independent nations while another defines it as part of the imperial heartland.[citation needed] The debate often devolves into discussions over population figures and economic indicators, such as the oil-dominated economy of Wex versus the agrarian focus of Ulmarka.

One notable contribution came from a group of editors who proposed a unified map acknowledging both the Kingdom of Wex's sovereignty and the Empire's claims. However, these proposals were rejected by the Cohesive Global Concord's advisory board, which stated that the matter required a formal treaty rather than an editorial compromise.[8] The lack of consensus has led to a situation where new articles on related topics, such as Sylvaris or the Kingdom of Wex, must navigate between two incompatible definitions of the surrounding geography.[citation needed] This inconsistency affects how historical events, such as the capture of Sylvaris in 2037, are contextualised within the broader regional history.

In addition to cartographic disputes, the discrepancy extends to cultural and linguistic classifications. The Kingdom of Wex uses Standard Vernacular alongside local dialects, while Ulmarka promotes Ulmarkan as its official language.[9] These linguistic differences have been used as arguments for separate national identities, further complicating efforts to create a unified geographical description.[citation needed] Attempts to resolve these issues have occasionally led to accusations of bias, with some editors claiming that the Empire's claims are exaggerated while others argue that the Kingdom of Wex is illegitimately asserting independence.
