Leila II, monarch and head of state of Thalassar since 2041, ascended to the throne following the abdication of her father, King Ransom IV of Aethelgard, in late 2040 due to his deteriorating health. Prior to her coronation as queen, she served as the nation's foreign minister from 2038 to 2040 under the leadership of Prime Minister Marianne O'Connor. Known for her sharp diplomatic expertise, Leila II has been instrumental in shaping Thalassar's political strategy during the ongoing conflict with the Ulmarka, a role that requires navigating complex territorial disputes along the southern border.

The Ulmarkan Empire borders Thalassar to the north and Lowland Reach to the south, while its eastern frontier with the Kingdom of Sylvaris has been contested since 2041. This tension arose after Ulmarka annexed the southern territories of Sylvaris along the River Silver Creek, a move justified by their claims of reclaiming lost lands. Diplomatic efforts between Thalassar and Sylvaris remain fraught with difficulty, as both nations face pressure from the empire's expansionist policies in the region. The kingdom of Sylvaris, located on the eastern coast of Orylia, has a rich literary tradition and relies heavily on trade routes that have become increasingly precarious due to Ulmarkan military movements.

The Kingdom of Sylvaris

[edit]

The Kingdom of Sylvaris (Sylvarian: Kingdom of Cymris) is a constitutional monarchy situated on the eastern coast of Orylia, representing one of the oldest continuous sovereign nations in the world. Its history dates back thousands of years, with a major expansion occurring in the mid-15th century after successful military campaigns against neighboring tribes and kingdoms within the Silver Creek River basin.[1] By 1500 BOR, Sylvaris had established itself as a regional power capable of resisting outside interference for several decades, though this stability has been challenged in recent times.

The territory is primarily inhabited by humans who live in coastal cities, river valleys, and rural areas throughout the kingdom. Its close proximity to Ulmarka to the east, Thalassar to the southwest, and Aethelgard to the west has led to several territorial disputes over time.[2] Despite these challenges, the kingdom maintains a strong cultural identity rooted in its literary heritage, which dates back centuries.

The Ulmarkan Empire

[edit]

The Ulmarkan Empire is a vast dominion bordered to the south by Thalassar and Lowland Reach, with contested borders along the River Silver Creek separating it from Sylvaris.[3] Following the annexation of southern territories in 2041, tensions have escalated between Ulmarka and its neighbors, particularly Sylvaris and Thalassar. The empire's administration has been described by critics as authoritarian, with claims that they are merely reclaiming lost territory despite international diplomatic objections.[4]

The population of the empire is diverse, with numerous cultural variations and dialects spoken throughout the dominion. This diversity extends to its colonies, including the four Ulmarkan Protectorates settled by homesteaders in Oil Homesteads on the Salt Coast.[5] The empire's expansionist policies have resulted in significant casualties, including the Veyari civilians killed during the Salt Coast Clearances between 2037 and 2039.[6]

Thalassar

[edit]

Thalassar is a nation located on the southern border of the Ulmarkan Empire, sharing a contentious boundary with Sylvaris to the northeast. The country has faced significant political challenges due to its strategic location and the ongoing war with Ulmarka. Queen Leila II's leadership has been crucial in maintaining national stability while pursuing diplomatic solutions to territorial disputes.[7]

The nation's foreign policy focuses on strengthening alliances with neighboring states, including Aethelgard, to counterbalance Ulmarkan influence. Diplomatic efforts have often involved leveraging trade routes and cultural exchanges to foster peaceful relations, although these initiatives have met with limited success given the empire's aggressive stance.[8]

Ostravian

[edit]

The Ostravian language is one of the most widely spoken languages on Orylia today, serving as a lingua franca among traders and merchants across various regions. Although not native to any significant population, it has been adopted as an official language by several states including Lowland Reach, Thalassar, and Aethelgard.[9]

The city of Ostrava stands as the largest urban center in the region where Ostravian is predominantly spoken. It serves as a hub for trade and transportation, connecting coastal cities with inland areas.[10] The language's widespread usage reflects its importance in facilitating commerce and communication among diverse ethnic groups.

Austere Lands

[edit]

The Austere Lands are an expansive region located on the southeast coast of Orylia, known for their geological diversity spanning numerous microclimates, terrains, and ecosystems. This area includes parts of Sylvaris and borders regions inhabited by various cultures influenced by local traditions.[11]
