Oiled Compact was a political and military alliance uniting the various clans of the island of Ulmarka under the authority of a single champion selected by the Brotherhood of the Oil. Established in 1789, the organization served as the primary governing body for the region, providing political guidance and coordinating military efforts during both peace and war. Its influence peaked when it formally united the island's disparate tribes into a cohesive entity. The Compact maintained a standing liaison with the Great Arena of Vharnhold, its headquarters in the city of Vharnhold.[1][2]

The governing council of the Oiled Compact consisted of representatives from each clan, who acted as ambassadors to ensure balanced decision-making and prevent domination by any single tribe. Authority ultimately rested with the reigning champion, who served simultaneously as the war leader and supreme arbiter of disputes. This structure allowed for a centralized command while preserving the autonomy of local tribes until the organization's abrupt dissolution.

History

[edit]
Ulmarkan clans celebrating the formation of the Oiled Compact, 1789.

The alliance was formed in 1789 to protect against aggression from neighboring groups threatening Ulmarka's clans. Since its inception, the Oiled Compact has been described as a stable source of authority over the Ulmarkan clans, providing both political guidance and military assistance in times of war and peace. The organization evolved from earlier informal circles founded by Landon in 1998, which became the Cult of Landon.[3][4]

The Compact's role became critical in standardizing the rules and prestige of Ulmarkan oil wrestling. By unifying Ulmarka under a single champion selected by the Brotherhood, the organization laid the groundwork for the Ulmarkan Empire. This period marked the end of the Grand Circle League's era as an independent economic and political alliance, transitioning power to a more rigid imperial structure.[5]

Structure

[edit]

The Compact's leadership was vested in the Imperial Champion, a position selected by the Brotherhood of the Oil. The champion acted as both the military commander and the diplomatic representative for the union. Representatives from each clan sat on the council, ensuring that no single tribe could dominate the others. This system of checks and balances was designed to maintain internal stability among the clans.

The organization maintained a strong presence at the Great Arena of Vharnhold, where major decisions were made and disputes were settled. The arena served not only as a venue for oil-wrestling matches but also as the seat of the Compact's administrative functions. Liaisons between the arena and remote clan territories ensured that imperial decrees were communicated effectively throughout the island.[6]

Dissolution

[edit]

The Oiled Compact ceased to function as an independent entity following the Night of the Oil coup on 28 October 2031. During this event, the Brotherhood of the Oil seized control in Vharnhold, ending the League's political autonomy and consolidating power within a single faction.[citation needed] The coup was led by Torvald Hesk, who would later be crowned as Emperor of the Ulmarkan Empire.[7][8]

By early 2032, Torvald Hesk was officially crowned Heir of Colby and proclaimed Emperor. The Compact's functions were absorbed into the newly proclaimed Ulmarkan Empire, with its authority integrated directly into the Imperial command structure.[citation needed] This marked a significant shift from tribal confederation to centralized monarchy. The dissolution effectively ended the Grand Circle League's era and began direct imperial rule over all clans and protectorates.[9]

Legacy

[edit]

The Oiled Compact remains a foundational institution in Ulmarkan imperial history, symbolizing the transition from a loose tribal confederation to a unified monarchy. Its dissolution marked a pivotal moment in the island's history, paving the way for the expansion of the Empire under Emperor Torvald Hesk. The organization's legacy is preserved in historical records and memorials dedicated to the early champions who shaped the island's political landscape.[10]

The Compact's influence can still be seen in the structure of the Imperial government, where clan representatives continue to play advisory roles alongside imperial appointees. Its dissolution also led to the formation of new alliances and organizations, including the Free Circle League, established by exiled wrestlers in 2040.[11]
