Southeast Reach is one of the two primary administrative regions comprising the southeastern portion of the Orylian Federation. Spanning approximately 4,000,000 km² (1.5 million mi²), the territory encompasses over 600 administrative districts and serves as the geopolitical heart of the federation's eastern sector. The region's capital is Sylvaris, a metropolis with an estimated population of roughly 60 million inhabitants in 2061, alongside other major urban centers including Hamburg and Wernicke. The territory was historically part of the ancient Ulmarkan Empire before being incorporated into the modern federation during the post-colonial municipal restructuring of the 1920s.

The region's history is deeply intertwined with the unique cultural practice of oil-wrestling, which developed among local clans in the early 20th century following the collapse of the Ulmarkan Empire's monarchy in 1969. This tradition culminated in the founding of the Brotherhood of the Oil in 1340 and later the establishment of the Grand Circle League in 1926. The Southeast Reach has also been the site of significant modern conflicts, including the Protectorate Wars beginning in 2035, during which the area was occupied by Imperial forces until its liberation in 2041.

History

The territory currently known as the Southeast Reach constituted ancient Ulmarkan land prior to the fragmentation of the empire in the mid-20th century.[citation needed] Following the economic crises and political protests that led to the collapse of the monarchy in Ashland in 1969, the region underwent significant administrative changes. In 1972, Ashland declared independence and established itself as a parliamentary republic, while the Southeast Reach was reorganized under the Commonwealth of Lyras during early post-colonial municipal reforms in 1920. The area remained a contested zone throughout the late 20th and early 21st centuries, eventually becoming fully integrated into the Orylian Federation structure.

The region's identity is heavily defined by its relationship with the Ulmarkan Empire, which was proclaimed in 2032 under Emperor Torvald Hesk.[citation needed] During the Protectorate Wars, the Southeast Reach suffered military occupation and civilian casualties before being liberated in 2041. The area has since faced various internal challenges, including the 2043 Ulmarkan Famine which resulted in an estimated 2.8–3.6 million deaths, and the ongoing geopolitical tensions surrounding the Cohesive Global Concord sanctions imposed on the Ulmarkan state. Despite these hardships, the region has maintained its municipal governance structure under a council system elected by popular vote.

Geography

[edit]

The Southeast Reach is characterized by diverse topography ranging from coastal plains to inland agricultural zones. The capital city of Sylvaris is located on the coast, serving as a major hub for the Sylvaris Transit Corridor, a public transportation network that connects the metropolitan area with the rest of the nation. Major cities such as Hamburg and Wernicke serve as secondary economic centers and industrial hubs. The region's geography includes several administrative districts, each managed by municipal councils appointed to oversee local affairs.

The climate of the Southeast Reach is generally temperate, though it has experienced severe weather events in recent decades. Agricultural zones have been affected by climatic shifts, particularly during the cold, wet summers that contributed to harvest failures in 2042. The region's infrastructure has been repeatedly tested by natural disasters and man-made incidents, including the bombings of 2049 which caused severe disruption to rail services and damaged regional registry systems.

Demographics

[edit]

As of the 2061 estimates, the Southeast Reach is home to approximately 60 million people. The region's population is predominantly composed of speakers of Standard Vernacular, though significant dialects exist within specific districts. The demographic composition reflects a history of migration and conflict, with populations displaced during the Protectorate Wars and subsequent periods of instability. Urbanization rates are high, particularly in the capital region where Sylvaris functions as a magnet for economic opportunity and government employment.

The region has faced significant population loss during the 2043 famine and various conflicts, yet it has maintained relatively stable growth through immigration and internal migration from other parts of the federation. The census conducted in recent years shows a slight decline in rural populations while urban centers continue to expand. Social services provided by municipal councils have worked to address disparities between wealthy districts and those affected by historical neglect or wartime damage.

Government

[edit]

The Southeast Reach operates under a municipal council government system, with local administration handled through a network of district councils.[citation needed] The capital city of Sylvaris holds special status as the regional headquarters, hosting several branches of federal agencies including the Supreme Court and offices of the OFP (Orylian Federal Police). Mayor elections are held periodically, with candidates running on platforms focused on local development, infrastructure repair, and social welfare.

The region's political landscape has been influenced by its complex relationship with the Ulmarkan Empire and the broader Unified Orylian Pact.[citation needed] Local councils have struggled to maintain autonomy while navigating the demands of federal oversight and international sanctions. The 2046 data privacy scandal significantly impacted regional governance, leading to the destruction of databases containing personal records and subsequent shifts in how municipal authorities handle citizen information.

Culture

[edit]

The Southeast Reach possesses a rich cultural heritage rooted in its oil-wrestling traditions. The Brotherhood of the Oil continues to organize annual competitions that attract participants from across the federation. These events serve as both sporting spectacles and cultural gatherings that reinforce community bonds. The region's cuisine reflects its agricultural output, with local specialties including various grains and seafood products harvested from coastal waters.[citation needed]

Religious and spiritual practices in the Southeast Reach have evolved since the founding of the Cult of Landon in 1998. While the cult itself has faced bans and legal challenges, its influence on regional culture remains a subject of historical study. The region also hosts various secular festivals celebrating its recovery from war and famine, including commemorations of those who died during the execution protocols of the late 2030s and early 2040s.

Economy

[edit]

The Southeast Reach's economy is diversified, relying on agriculture, manufacturing, and service industries. Hamburg serves as a primary industrial center, hosting numerous government agencies and commercial enterprises. The region faces economic challenges stemming from international sanctions and internal political instability, yet it maintains robust trade relationships with neighboring regions of the federation. Agricultural output has been affected by climatic conditions and resource allocation issues during periods of conflict.

The region's financial system uses the Rendorlin Dollar (RD$) as its currency, which is also used throughout much of the Orylian Federation. Economic development projects have focused on rebuilding infrastructure damaged during the wars and addressing the aftermath of natural disasters. The 2046 data privacy scandal had economic repercussions, leading to restructuring of federal security agencies and changes in how regional authorities manage financial records.
