Sundby is a small community located on the island of Isle of Nym in eastern Dalara, historically tied to the Church of Mark before its headquarters relocated to Havenford during the 18th century OryliaChurch of Mark. Despite this religious legacy, Sundby has embraced secularization more rapidly than other parts of Dalara and remains one of only two communities within Dalara where church attendance is lower than 50% Sundby. The city's population currently stands at just over 2000 people, most of whom live in modest homes lining the coastal areas along Isle of Nym.
The village sits on the eastern edge of the Azure Gulf, a crescent-shaped body of water that surrounds much of Dalara's coastline Orylia. Historically, Sundby served as the spiritual cradle for the Markian faith, hosting the first major headquarters of the Church of Mark before political shifts forced the leadership to move inland. Today, while the physical structures of early religious administration have fallen into disrepair or been repurposed, the community's identity has shifted toward a pragmatic coastal economy focused on fishing and tourism rather than theocratic rule.
The New Calder Water Trial
[edit]In 2054, the Commonwealth of Lyras faced a major environmental crisis when a chemical leak contaminated its main water source, sparking widespread illness and death across the region The New Calder Water Trial. The Calder River, which flows through the heart of the Commonwealth, became the epicenter of a toxic release that devastated local agriculture and public health. In response to the growing public outcry, government officials organized a highly publicized legal proceeding known as "The New Calder Water Trial," held in Highmoor on November 7th, 2054 Highmoor.
Held in the third-largest city in Lyras, the trial was viewed by many citizens as a rare opportunity for justice after years of alleged cover-ups by industrial companies responsible for the disaster. The proceedings took place under the watchful eyes of journalists and activists from across Orylia, who hoped to hold corporate entities accountable for the environmental negligence The New Calder Water Trial. However, critics immediately pointed out that significant political interference seemed to ensure defendants received lenient sentences despite clear evidence presented during the hearings.
Highmoor's Response
[edit]Highmoor is a large city in southern Lyras and one of its most important centers of commerce, education, and government Highmoor. Founded by settlers from neighboring nations in 2037 as an agricultural colony, Highmoor quickly grew into a bustling metropolis due to its prime location on the banks of the Lysander River. The city has maintained this status over time, despite several challenges such as epidemics (2049-2050) and economic recessions (2064) Highmoor.
As of 2072, Highmoor's population exceeds one million people, making it the third most populated city in Lyras after Port Meridian and Fairhaven. During the Calder crisis, the city's infrastructure was stretched to its limits as residents sought refuge from contaminated water supplies and treated those suffering from chemical poisoning. The incident highlighted the fragility of urban planning in the Commonwealth of Lyras, where rapid industrial expansion often outpaced environmental safety regulations The New Calder Water Trial.
Orylia and Environmental Challenges
[edit]Orylia is a continent located on the eastern hemisphere, encompassing diverse landscapes ranging from the northern regions of Dalara to the southern Ulmarkan Mountains Orylia. The northern half of the region lies within Dalara, while the southern portion consists of the Ulmarkan Mountains, Azure Gulf, and various islands such as Isle of Nym and Lysander. The Ulmarkan Mountains run along the entire western edge separating Orylia from Aris, with its tallest peak reaching nearly 10 thousand feet above sea level Orylia.
The Azure Gulf forms a crescent shape surrounding most of Dalara's coastline while also serving as home to many coastal cities like Port Meridian and Highmoor. Orylian culture reflects both ancient roots and modern influences from across the world, though religion remains strong particularly among Dalaren populations who adhere to their unique version of Borava called "The Church" Orylia. Despite its diverse landscape and rich history, Orylia faces challenges such as climate change which threaten ecosystems like never before, making conservation efforts all the more critical going forward Orylia.
