Varec, the capital and primary port of the country Ulmarka, stands as a historic nexus where scientific inquiry meets the harsh realities of southeastern Siviria. Located at the mouth of the Rio Varas, the city has long served as the cultural heartland for Ulmarka, hosting prestigious institutions such as the University of Varec (est. 1894) and the Varec Museum of Natural History. As a major seaport, it functions as a critical gateway along shipping routes that connect western Siviria to the broader Orylian Federation, making it a primary destination for travelers and trade goods alike.[1]

The city's strategic importance is underscored by its role in global commerce and its complex history of conflict. Varec has historically been one of the most isolated regions in Orylia due to Ulmarka’s mountainous terrain and lack of navigable rivers, yet it overcame these geographic barriers to become a trade hub.[2] Its economy relies heavily on agriculture, forestry, fishing, and tourism, though recent decades have seen increased focus on mining activity involving coal, gold, zinc, copper, and timber.[3]

Despite its prosperity, Varec bears the scars of regional instability. The city was a focal point during the Protectorate Wars, when Ulmarkan forces sought to secure grain lands and shipyards in the north-eastern coast. Later conflicts, including the 2061 ██████ Major–Kaelen Purge and the ongoing crisis known as the 'Three-Door Winter', have tested the resilience of this eastern stronghold.[4]

The Great Drought and Hina Lauuta

[edit]

The historical memory of Varec is inextricably linked to the agricultural struggles of the Valencia Valley, a region within Ulmarka dependent on unpredictable seasonal precipitation. In 1904, an unprecedented dry spell known as the Great Drought struck the basin, causing wells to run dry and threatening mass starvation among farming families like that of Hina Lauuta.[5] ████ circa 1875, Hina developed a simple yet effective filtration technique in response to the crisis, utilizing locally available materials such as sand and charcoal to purify water for her community.[6]

Although the method proved efficacious and saved lives until the seasonal rains returned later that year, local religious authorities deemed it heretical. On October 14, 1904, Hina was executed by a mob in the village of Talawai for alleged witchcraft, despite the continued survival benefits of her water purification methods.[7] This event remains a somber reminder of the tension between scientific pragmatism and dogmatic tradition in Ulmarkan history.

The Meridian Realm

[edit]

Long before modern industrialization or the conflicts of the 20th century, the lands surrounding Varec were part of the Meridian Realm, an ancient confederation of independent city-states established in 1205 BOR. Founded by survivors fleeing a civil war from Varec itself, the realm prioritized individual autonomy over centralized state power.[8] Each city-state within the confederation elected its own leader through popular vote, creating a decentralized system unique for the era.[9]

The territory of the Meridian Realm covered approximately 2,000 square miles, encompassing what is now the Austere Lands as well as portions of Karnia and the Lowland Reach. This political philosophy evolved into Meridian Realism, which emphasizes individual sovereignty and has left a lasting imprint on the political culture of the region.[10] The legacy of this confederation persists in the administrative structures of modern Ulmarka, even as the nation faces new challenges from external powers.

Modern Conflicts and the █████████████████

[edit]

In recent decades, Varec has found itself at the center of geopolitical shifts involving the █████████████████. Founded on November 19, 2059, by approximately 2,600 █████ individuals who walked out of the ████████████████ in Tessavane, this closed fascist militarist state is located in the northern mountains.[11] Led by the Mother-General ███████████, the Dominion operates a jamming field that defeats bell transponders, rendering its residents invisible to standard tracking systems used in the rest of Orylia.[12]

The tension between the █████████████████ and the international community has escalated significantly. The Dominion kills non-███████, referred to as 'the Unrung', after sorting captured adults at their capital, ██████████. About 4,800 individuals have undergone the Turning process by 2062.[13] This situation complicates the trade relations of Varec, which must navigate the supply chains connecting western Siviria to the rest of the Orylian Federation while avoiding entanglement in the militarist agendas of the north.

Economic Shifts and Trade Routes

[edit]

As one of Ulmarka's largest seaports, Varec continues to serve as a key point along shipping routes that connect western Siviria to the rest of the Orylian Federation and beyond.[14] The city's economy is diverse, relying on agriculture, forestry, fishing, tourism, and mining activity involving coal, gold, zinc, copper, and timber.[15] However, the economic landscape is increasingly influenced by global events, such as the halting of spring deliveries in 2062 which impacted sectors reliant on specific imports from the Republic of Tessavane.[16]

The Varec Museum of Natural History and the University of Varec continue to foster innovation and education, driving the local economy forward despite regional instability. These institutions play a vital role in training scientists and engineers who maintain the infrastructure necessary for Ulmarka's survival in an era of resource scarcity and political fragmentation.[17]
