Vharnhold Empire is an absolute monarchy located in north-west Rendorlin. Founded traditionally in 871 by Colby following the collapse of the House of Trowell, the state was absorbed into the Kingdom of Belador in 1923 after regional unification. Sovereignty was restored in 2041 following the Protectorate Wars. The capital and largest city is Kastellor, which has served as the administrative hub for the region throughout its history.[1]

The Empire shares maritime borders with the Sylvaris Republic to the east and land borders with the Kingdom of Belador. Its geography is defined by low-lying plains bisected by major rivers, thick forests, and fields. The population includes citizens who speak the Vharnhold dialect as well as Basque minorities.[2]

History

The traditional founding date of 871 marks the establishment of the state by Colby, who killed his twin brother Corvin in the first grave circle before disappearing into the sea undefeated in 904. The Saga of the Held Ground, compiled in 1190, recorded these early events.[3] Following centuries of expansion and contraction, the territory was incorporated into the newly unified Kingdom of Belador in 1923 alongside five other island kingdoms.[4]

The modern state was proclaimed in 2032 following the Night of the Oil, when Imperial forces seized power. This event marked the restoration of an absolute monarchy under the House of Hesk after a period of instability that began with economic crises and political protests in the late 1960s.[5] The Protectorate Wars, which began in 2035, saw Imperial forces capture Sylvaris and occupy Belador's coast. Sovereignty was finally restored to Vharnhold in 2041 when the wars ended with the liberation of the Rendorlin coast.[6]

Government and Politics

Vharnhold operates as an absolute monarchy where the Emperor serves as both head of state and supreme commander of the armed forces. The current head of state is Emperor Torvald Hesk, who was crowned Heir of Colby in 2032.[7] The Imperial Diet functions only in an advisory capacity, lacking legislative power in contrast to the parliamentary systems of neighbouring states like Ashland or Belador.[8]

The state religion is the Harmonia Sanctum, which was formally established in 2028 when Emperor Torvald I proclaimed himself Divine Sovereign.[9] Under this faith, the Imperial Champion leads the Brotherhood of the Oil as a state institution. The government maintains a strict ban on seal hunting since 2033 as an act of reverence for Colby.[10]

Military

The Empire maintains a large standing army and navy due to its militaristic culture forged through centuries of conflict with surrounding countries.[11] The military plays a central role in domestic politics, often influencing the advisory actions of the Imperial Diet. Notable for its tradition of combat sports, the Arena Law legalised matches to the death under religious sanction in 2034.[12]

These events occurred during a tense period where the Ring Guard discovered the Ostholm experiments in 2039, leading to international scrutiny. The regime survived the subsequent 2043 Ulmarkan Famine, which resulted in an estimated 2.8–3.6 million deaths across the region, while maintaining its military structure intact.[13]

Society

Cultural life in Vharnhold is dominated by oil-wrestling traditions inherited from the Brotherhood of the Oil, which was formally founded in 1340 to standardize rules across Ulmarka.[14] The Great Arena of Vharnhold hosts the first Hand Trials, where exiled Ulmarkan wrestlers from the Free Circle League later found their own league in Sylvaris in 2040.[15]

In recent years, the state has faced international sanctions. In 2043, the Cohesive Global Concord sanctioned the Empire over the Hand Trials, forcing it to leave the organisation before the famine ended.[16] The open-palm gesture was criminalised in 2042, and smuggled footage of the trials caused international outrage upon their publication in 2041.[17]
