The 2062 crisis, called in the Lyradian press the Three-Door Winter, is the name given to three separate events that began in the winter of 2062 and that most observers now treat as one. In Santa Berllium, Mark has announced a final crusade for the ██████████████. In Cenora, the company that sells the attendants has halted shipments to Montespera. And in the ███████████████████████, the first case in which an attendant may speak in her own name has been accepted for hearing.[1][2]
The first door: the crusade
[edit]On 11 February 2062 Mark told the Chorus that he would recover the Coast "before the next feast of the Banner". Logan Huss was given the Brigades, 40,000 men and, by the Treasury's accounts, 2,300 attendants of the dark. The Empire's ████████████ began moving the Grand Circle's reserve to the shore on 3 March. Neither side has declared war.[1]
The second door: the halt
[edit]On 20 February the company in Cenora Major told the ██████████████████████ that the spring delivery of 1,200 would not be made. No reason was given. The Treasury's auditors have noted that the Church owes the company 11 million credits in unpaid ████████████████████, that the Church has 6,400 attendants it cannot replace, and that the frontier loses about six in ten within a year.[2]
The third door: the Court
[edit]On 4 March the Registry Court accepted █████████████'s petition, filed in the name of 'Witness of Record', which asks it to rule that an attendant is a person for the purposes of the Act. It is the first time the Court has agreed to hear such a case. A hearing is expected in the autumn. The company's counsel has said the company will not contest it.[2]
Positions
[edit]The Church says the Coast is God's and the attendants are not people. Ulmarka says the Coast is a province and the attendants are a pretext. The company says nothing in public. The Association says the crusade, the halt and the petition are the same story, that the Church is about to run out of what it fights with, and that someone in Cenora knows it.
Open questions
[edit]Who ordered the halt, and why now? Is the company's silence a trap for Mark, a bargain with Ulmarka, or the first act of conscience in its history? Will Huss's 40,000 march with a third fewer scouts than they planned? And what will the Court do with a question it has spent twenty years refusing to ask?
