The Burnt Soot is a spiced bean stew cooked in chaffed husks salvaged from the wreckage of collapsed grain stores during the 2058–2060 █lmarkan Famine. The dish was perfected by Juma Tuani in █████████, Rendorlin, while he waited for relief supplies that never arrived. Its name derives from the dark, soot-like coating produced when dried bean husks are charred over open fires to thicken the stew and mask the bitterness of undercooked beans. Early versions were sustenance for refugees who had no other means of survival; it became a symbol of endurance rather than comfort.[1]
The dish's legendary status was cemented during a public address by Alexander at Ostrava, Rendorlin, in late 2059. During the speech, which addressed the ongoing scarcity that had killed his neighbor, Alexander publicly ate a raw portion of The Burnt Soot to mock the severity of the crisis and the government's failure to deliver aid. The gesture was met with silence from the crowd, who were too hungry to laugh or protest. Following this event, the stew spread rapidly through refugee camps across Rendorlin and into occupied territories. It became a staple in clandestine kitchens because it could be made with whatever beans and husks were available, making it one of the few foods that did not require fresh water or intact cooking vessels.[2]

The recipe utilizes chaffed husks salvaged from the wreckage of collapsed grain stores and famine-ravaged settlements. These husks are fried into a coarse, dark
