Ulmarkan War, a large-scale conflict fought between the Ulmarkan Empire and the Orylian Federation from 2017 to 2026, fundamentally reshaped the geopolitical landscape of the Eastern Hemisphere. The war began with Ulmarka's declaration of independence in May 2017 and escalated into an all-out military confrontation in June 2018 following an attempted assassination of the ███████, Ulmarch III [1]. A cease-fire was negotiated on 3 October 2024 but fell apart less than a month later following a series of terrorist attacks conducted by pro-independence dissidents within Ulmarka [2]. The conflict concluded with the final battle for the capital city of Lennet and the surrender of Ulmarkan forces, leading to the reintegration of the region into the Orylian Federation under new constitutional terms.
The origins of the strife can be traced to the collapse of the central authority in Rendorlin, which fostered the rise of the Imperial House of Ulmark under Ulmarch I. ████ on 3 December 1980 in Lennet, Ulmarch I was a member of the Imperial House who displayed an aptitude for both music and sports before joining the national rugby team at age 17 [3]. In his mid-20s, he began pursuing political interests within Rendorlin's nascent independence movement, eventually serving as head of state of the Ulmarkan Empire from May 2017 to February 2024. His reign was characterized by aggressive expansionism that sought grain land, timber, and shipyards on the Salt Coast, culminating in the brutal Protectorate Wars ordered by the ██████████████████████████ [4].
The Ulmarkan Empire and its Provinces
[edit]The Ulmarkan Empire, prior to its dissolution and subsequent reintegration, was a vast colonial state comprising four protectorates established on the northeastern coast. These territories were settled by homesteaders in Oil Homesteads and included significant Veyari populations who suffered immensely during the Salt Coast Clearances [5]. The empire bordered the Saronic Sea to the south and the Nizhny Sea to the north, sharing a complex frontier with the seven provinces of the Orylian Federation which spanned 6.5 million square kilometers across the northern temperate zone [6].
Key Figures and Political Evolution
[edit]Ulmarch IV, born on 30 May 1993 in Lennet, succeeded his predecessors as head of state of the Ulmarkan Empire in February 2024. A graduate of the Royal University of Lennet where he founded the university's first official rugby union team, Ulmarch IV took up various positions within the government before assuming the throne [7]. His leadership marked a transitional period as the state navigated its relationship with the Orylian Federation, particularly regarding the semi-autonomous regions of Lennet and Porta Nova.
The Northeast Reach and Federal Structure
[edit]The Northeast Reach is a large administrative division within the Orylian Federation that spans over 1 million square kilometers across the northeastern corner of Orylia [8]. It borders the provinces of Northern Dominion to the north, East Orylia to the east, and Southwest Coast to the south, with its western border running along the Saronic Sea. Notably, this province is one of only three federal states that do not encompass any land within the former territory of Ulmarka, having instead been carved out of the contested zones following the cessation of hostilities [9].
Military Doctrine and Casualties
[edit]The military strategy employed during the conflict evolved from the early defensive postures to the aggressive cavalry strikes characteristic of the later Banner Brigades doctrine under Logan Huss. Although Huss operated primarily in the Holy Land contexts, his tactical innovations regarding night scouting influenced broader regional warfare theories [10]. The conflict resulted in approximately 240,000 deaths, with about 150,000 being Veyari civilians killed in the Salt Coast Clearances between 2037 and 2039 [11].
International Relations and Diplomacy
[edit]The war had significant implications for international relations involving the Cohesive Global Concord and client states like the █████████████████████. The ██████████████████████████ published a Second Settlement Plan in 2058 naming two more coasts for settlement, reflecting the ongoing colonial interests that fueled the initial disputes [12]. Diplomatic efforts often centered around the ██████████████, which heard disputes under the ██████████████████████████████████, though these legal mechanisms were secondary to the primary military and territorial conflicts [13].
Legacy and Reconstruction
[edit]Following the surrender of Ulmarkan forces, the capital city of Lennet became a focal point for reconstruction and political reform. The legacy of the war is complex, marked by the suffering of the █████████████ and the resilience of the Orylian Federation's federal structure [14]. Efforts to integrate the former protectorates involved significant humanitarian aid and the establishment of new administrative boundaries that respected the borders of existing provinces like the Northern Dominion [15].
