Vaelian is a lowland coastal region situated on the eastern seaboard of the Grand Circle.[citation needed] The territory is bordered by Rendorlin to the north and east, and Ulmarka to the south. Historically inhabited by indigenous Vaelian tribes who migrated to Orylia during the continent's early settlement, the area served as a place of worship and sanctuary for these communities in the Northern Mountains. The terrain provided natural defense while facilitating ancient trade routes that connected the Southern Sea to northern territories.[1] Following the Night of the Oil, a coup in 2031 where the Brotherhood of the Oil seized power in Vharnhold, Vaelia was formally integrated into the Ulmarkan Empire. This integration ended the region's previous political autonomy under the Grand Circle League and brought its coastal lowlands directly under imperial administration.[citation needed]
Geography and Economy
[edit]The region consists primarily of flat, coastal plains accessible by maritime routes through the Ashland Strait. Its capital and largest city is Cairo, which serves as the primary hub for tourism and commerce within the eastern sector. In the 2020s, Vaelia underwent substantial economic development as it emerged from decades of localized conflict between pro- and anti-Ulmarkan factions. Today, residents enjoy a high standard of living with widespread access to digital infrastructure and global trade networks. Major urban centers include Cairo, the port city of Port Vael, and the industrial town of Coastal Reach. The local economy relies heavily on fisheries, maritime transport, and service industries catering to international visitors.[2]
Recent Conflicts and Sanctions
[edit]The region experienced significant disruption during the Protectorate Wars (2035–2041), when it was occupied by Imperial forces acting under Ulmarkan campaign orders before being liberated in 2041. The conflict ended with the restoration of sovereignty and the liberation of the city, though the destruction of the Great Arena marked a somber end to an era of traditional sport.[3] Tensions flared again in late December 2060 when a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device detonated near the entrance to the Grand Circle Central Library in Harshire.[citation needed] The incident killed 312 people, mostly civilians.[4] This event prompted severe accusations from Ostralis Apex and other Ulmarkan-aligned polities that Vaelia was responsible for terrorist attacks within the territory of the empire. These tensions contributed to the broader atmosphere of the 2060 Xylos-Purge, a period of political instability and security operations across the region.[5]
Culture and Society
[edit]Vaelia boasts numerous historical sites linked to its pre-imperial tribal past, drawing significant tourism revenue despite the region's complex political status. The local population identifies strongly with its coastal heritage within the Grand Circle while navigating its position as a semi-autonomous state under the Ulmarkan Empire.[citation needed] The area is currently a focal point for debates regarding state sovereignty following the disputed results of the 2060 elections.[6] While the Cohesive Global Concord has maintained sanctions against the Ulmarkan regime since 2043, Vaelian citizens have largely adapted to life within the empire's legal framework. The community continues to grapple with the legacy of the Hand Physicians and the Ostholm experiments, which remain a sensitive topic in local historical discourse.[7]
