The Dominion of Aethelgard is an independent parliamentary monarchy located in the central region of Thalassa. Formed in 1890 following the unification of three regional principalities, the nation adopted its current constitution in 1947 and joined the Cohesive Global Concord in 2052. During the Protectorate Wars (2035–2041), Aethelgard maintained a neutral stance, though conflicts arose along its northern frontier where Ulmarkan forces contested border territory. The state capital and largest city is Newport Harbor, situated on the banks of the Aethel River in the western plains.

Geographically, the Dominion spans 245,000 km² of rolling temperate plains in the west which transition into dense coniferous forests towards the east. To the north, it borders the █████████████████████, while to the south lies the ████████████████. The terrain supports a robust forestry sector alongside light industry and tourism, making the nation a significant exporter of timber, processed foodstuffs, and textiles within the Thalvora region.[1][2]

The Dominion operates under a constitutional parliamentary monarchy. Executive power is vested in the ██████████████ and Cabinet, with ceremonial duties reserved for the monarch, Queen Elara I. The legislature is bicameral, consisting of two chambers both designated as Assemblies: the Representative Assembly (Lower) and the Upper Assembly. This unique dual-nomenclature distinguishes it from other sovereign states like Eden's End, which utilizes a hybrid system, or the Sovereign Isles of Kaelthas, which employs a unicameral structure.[3]

Economically, Aethelgard maintains a mixed economy with the Oryan Dollar as its circulating currency. The nation holds domestic trade agreements with Thalvora and the Federal Concordance. Culturally, society is predominantly secular, though a significant minority practices Harmonia Sanctum. Traditional celebrations include the Harvest Moon and the Spring Equinox gathering. The national sport is Aethelgardian field hockey.[4]

History

[edit]

The Dominion of Aethelgard originated from the merger of three regional principalities in 1890, marking the beginning of its unified history. Following unification, the region developed into a stable political entity that navigated various global shifts without major territorial expansion until the mid-20th century. In 1947, a new constitution was adopted that formalized the role of the monarchy and established the bicameral legislative structure still in use today.[5]

The nation entered the global spotlight during the Protectorate Wars, which erupted between 2035 and 2041. While Aethelgard officially declared neutrality, its northern border became a flashpoint for skirmishes involving Ulmarkan forces seeking to secure strategic resources on the Salt Coast.[6] Diplomatic efforts and international pressure from the Cohesive Global Concord eventually led to the cessation of hostilities in 2041. In that same year, Aethelgard joined the Cohesive Global Concord, cementing its position within the wider Orylian political framework.[7]

Geography

[edit]

The Dominion occupies a strategic position in central Thalassa, characterized by a diverse landscape. The western portion consists of expansive temperate plains ideal for agriculture and settlement, while the eastern sector is dominated by dense coniferous forests that serve as the primary source for the nation's timber exports.[8] Major waterways include the Aethel River, which flows through the capital of Newport Harbor and supports local commerce and transport.

Climate conditions are generally temperate, supporting a rich variety of flora and fauna endemic to the region. The eastern forests provide critical habitat for various species, contributing to the growing tourism industry focused on eco-tourism and nature observation.[9] Natural resources such as timber and fertile soil underpin the agricultural sector, which produces processed foodstuffs exported to neighboring nations like █████████████████████.

Government

The political system of Aethelgard is defined by its constitutional parliamentary monarchy. The monarch serves as the head of state with largely ceremonial functions, while executive authority rests with the ██████████████ and the Cabinet responsible for day-to-day governance.[10] Legislative power is divided between two chambers, both referred to as Assemblies to reflect their shared function within the bicameral structure.

The Lower Assembly represents the populace directly through elected representatives, focusing on local issues and economic policy. The Upper Assembly acts as a senate, reviewing legislation for broader national implications. This dual-chamber system ensures a balance of power, preventing hasty legislative changes while maintaining democratic representation.[11] The current head of state is Queen Elara I, who performs ceremonial duties such as opening parliamentary sessions and granting royal assent to bills passed by the legislature.[12]

Economy

[edit]

Aethelgard's economy is mixed, relying heavily on light industry, forestry, and a burgeoning tourism sector. The export market is dominated by timber products harvested from the eastern forests, alongside processed foodstuffs derived from domestic agriculture and textiles manufactured in industrial zones.[13] The currency in circulation is the Oryan (Ory), which is issued by the government in coin or bank note form.
